Foundation Behaviors
These are the behaviors I usually start with as they are fairly easy for both the dog and human to learn. Plus we can build on these with other behaviors.
When starting anything new, do your best to make the environment as distraction free as possible. Only work for 3-5 minutes and always end on a good note! Training should be fun, not stressful. Be sure to take play breaks with your dog!
I like to use a Clicker to mark behavior. It’s like saying “Yes”, or maybe “Good”. With a clicker it’s the same sound each and every time. A clear consistent form of communication. It can be intimidating learning a new mechanical skill. But practice makes progress, so don’t get discouraged! Take a look at this video How to Start Clicker Training for more information.
- Up/Down Game
- Part of Leslie McDevitt’s Control Unleashed Program.
- Teaches your dog to orient to you.
- Confidence builder around distractions
- Foundation for other games that will help with leash walking.
- Hand Target or “Touch”
- Confidence builder.
- Some dogs don’t like hands reached out at them, this teaches a different response.
- You can also use objects like a pen or wooden spoon.
- Stand Still and Do Nothing
- Helpful for large dogs.
- Standing still and doing nothing is a behavior. It’s not jumping, barking, lunging, or finding other trouble to get into.
- As an added bonus, they’ll usually get tired of standing and sit down on their own.
- To practice: Stand with your dog next to you. Click, or use your marker word, and give them a treat. Feed them close to you so they stay close. Repeat.
- Place/Settle/Station
- A mat is great for this. Take the behavior on the go
- Platforms will help jumpy dogs keep four paws on the floor
